Purgatory Mountain trail is on the North Carolina Zoological Park property. Which is about 2600 acres into the Uwharrie Mountain range in central North Carolina. Making it the World's Largest habitat Zoo. Purgatory Mountain also is famous for the Ghost story of "The Hunter" from Civil War times. About a Headless ghost appearing every day break on top of Purgatory Mountain. He was be-headed by a group of local teens resistant to the Confederacy and going to battle. They had good reason for his demise. He would of done the same to them they figured out. So they hanged him when he came out of his cabin.
